Sidi Bou Said

Sidi Bou Said is a lovely town just north of Tunis, located on top of a steep cliff overlooking the Mediterranean.

In the 12th century/13th century AD Abou Said ibn Khalef ibn Yahia Ettamini el Beji arrived in the village of Jabal el-Menar and establishes a sanctuary.
After his death in 1231, he was buried there. In the 18th century Turkish governors of Tunis and wealthy citizens of the latter built residences in Sidi Bou Said. During the 1920s, Rodolphe d’Erlanger applied the blue-white theme all over the town.

The cobbled streets are lined with art shops, souvenir stalls and cafes.

Brilliant blue doors are framed with white-washed walls, draped in fragrant, sweet, smelling flowers, cascading off walls, wrapped around gates.

It is just a beautiful place to explore. Sidi Bou Said has inspired artists like Paul Klee and writer Andre Gide.
The steep streets are wonderful to explore and the town is small enough so you will not get lost for long.

Doors are a special feature of the village; ancient, huge and heavy, they are studded with traditional motifs of crescents, minarets and stars.
